Climax Manufacturing History

A History of Success!

The roots of Climax Manufacturing Company can be traced back as far as 1902, when the late Samuel L. Hirschey founded the Climax Incubator and Brooder Company. His patented design for an incubator, which was designed specifically for the hatching of chicken eggs, received many National and International awards. In the early 1900's, the company began manufacturing cheese drums for local dairy producers and boxes for florists throughout the North East United States. The growth opportunities for these markets were very promising and as a result Mr. Hirschey decided to discontinue the incubator segment of the business. With the increased focus on boxes, Climax Manufacturing was incorporated in 1904.

The company prospered in the early years and added other types of folding boxes to its product line. To secure a reliable source of raw materials (paperboard), Climax purchased its current paperboard mill, located in Carthage, New York in 1939.

While the company achieved a steady growth during World War II and during the 50’s, its next major step came in 1962 when it purchased the assets of the Brooklyn Folding Box Company. With this purchase they also acquired a high performance production printing and die-cutting machine. This was to be the first “in-line” press for the company. The manufacturing facility of Brooklyn Folding Box was liquidated and all production activities were transferred to the company’s plant in Castorland, New York. Subsequent to this acquisition Climax has become one of the major producers of retail packaging in the country.

The company has continued to explore new and exciting markets for their folding cartons. In the late 60’s, they introduced a completely new stock retail product line, which at the time was expected to “provide substantial sales growth” in the coming years. In 1991 they discontinued their Florist product line and entered into the Bakery and Deli Packaging market. Today, they are still considered a leader in product design and innovation. With a total of five patents to their credit, Climax continues to create packaging products that meet the ever changing needs of the marketplace.
