shortest open end dimension:

The dimensions of the box must be listed in the proper sequence -- L x W x D -- in order to achieve the shape intended. To determine the proper length, width, and depth, place the carton facing you with the opening pointing up. Dimensions should be given to the nearest sixteenths of an inch and measured from center of score to center of score. Always refer to the outside dimensions of the carton.

Why are the Dimensions so Important?

There are many important factors to consider when deciding on the appropriate size of your box.

Here's a list of just a few:

  • The board used to manufacture your box is the primary price "driver". Keeping in mind that the final height of the box has a greater impact on cost than length and width, a shallow box will cost less than a deep design.
  • A square box is more econonomical than a rectangular box.
  • Will the box fit in the shopping bag?
  • Will the box fit in the cash wrap counter?
  • Would case pack influence your distribution decision? Remember, the larger the box, a lesser case pack may result.
  • If you select a two-piece design (top & bottom), the depth of the top is important when determining the style of box you choose.
